Using Field Parameters for Dynamic Reports

Using Field Parameters for Dynamic Reports

What Are Field Parameters?

Field parameters allow report users to dynamically change the fields or measures displayed in supported visuals.

For example, a sales report might normally display revenue by product category. However, users may also want to analyze revenue by region, salesperson, or customer segment.

Instead of creating a separate chart for every field, you can use a field parameter to let users select the dimension they want to analyze.

Creating a Field Parameter

In Power BI Desktop:

  1. Open your report.
  2. Navigate to the Modeling tab.
  3. Select New parameter → Fields, where available.
  4. Give the parameter a meaningful name.
  5. Select the fields or measures users should be able to switch between.
  6. Create the parameter.
  7. Add the generated parameter to a visual and, if created, its selection slicer.

For example, a parameter might allow users to select between Product[Category], Region[RegionName], and Customer[Segment].

The selected field determines how the visual groups its data.

Example Use Case

Imagine a sales analysis report with a bar chart.

A field parameter allows the user to switch the chart's category between:

  • Product category
  • Sales region
  • Customer segment

The chart can update based on the user's selection, reducing the need for multiple similar visuals.

Benefits of Field Parameters

Field parameters can simplify report layouts, improve user interaction, and make it easier to explore different dimensions of the same dataset.

However, they should be used carefully. Users still need clear labels and a sensible set of choices. Too many options can make a report confusing.
