Creating Your First Power BI Report File
Before working with actual business data, become familiar with saving and managing a Power BI report.
Step 1: Open Power BI Desktop
Launch Power BI Desktop and create a new blank report.
You should see the report canvas and the interface areas used to build and configure visuals.
Step 2: Save the Report
Select File → Save As and choose a location for the file.
Power BI Desktop reports are commonly saved using the .pbix file extension.
For example:
SalesAnalysis.pbix
The PBIX file can contain report definitions, the data model, imported data, and other report components, depending on how the report is configured.
Step 3: Understand the Report Canvas
The report canvas is the area where visualizations will appear.
You can later add charts, cards, slicers, and tables to this space. Report pages can be arranged to tell a clear story about the data.
Step 4: Save Changes Regularly
As you develop your report, save your changes periodically.
Keeping report files organized helps you maintain versions of your work and makes it easier to return to earlier development stages.
For larger projects, use meaningful filenames and an organized folder structure.
Step 5: Prepare for the Next Module
Your environment is now ready for data analysis.
In the next module, you will learn how to connect Power BI to sources such as Excel, CSV files, databases, and web data. You will then begin working with real datasets instead of an empty report canvas.
