Creating and Publishing a Dashboard

Creating and Publishing a Dashboard

Step 1: Build a Report in Power BI Desktop

Start by creating a report containing the visuals that communicate the required business information.

For example, a sales performance report could contain:

  • A card showing total sales.
  • A chart comparing revenue by region.
  • A line chart showing monthly sales.
  • A chart displaying sales by product category.

Verify that the data model, calculations, and visual formatting are correct.

Step 2: Publish the Report

After saving the report, publish it to the Power BI Service.

  1. Open the report in Power BI Desktop.
  2. Select Publish.
  3. Sign in if prompted.
  4. Choose the destination workspace.
  5. Wait for the publishing process to complete.
  6. Open the published report in the Power BI Service.

Publishing makes the report available in the selected workspace, subject to permissions and licensing requirements.

Step 3: Create a Dashboard in the Service

In the Power BI Service, you can create a dashboard and pin supported visuals from a report.

  1. Open the published report.
  2. Locate a visual you want to display on the dashboard.
  3. Use the visual's pin option, where available.
  4. Select an existing dashboard or create a new one.
  5. Repeat the process for other important visuals.
  6. Open the dashboard and arrange the tiles.

Dashboard creation and pinning options may depend on the report type, workspace configuration, and current Power BI interface.

Step 4: Arrange and Review Tiles

Organize dashboard tiles so that the most important information is immediately visible.

Resize and reposition tiles as needed. Ensure that titles are clear and that users can identify the meaning of each metric without guessing.

Test the dashboard in the intended viewing environment before sharing it with others.

Important Consideration

Power BI dashboard features are primarily available in the Power BI Service rather than Power BI Desktop. Access to publishing, collaboration, and dashboard capabilities depends on the user's license, workspace setup, and organizational configuration.
