Understanding Tooltips

A tooltip displays additional information when a user hovers over a data point.

The default tooltip may show the category and value represented by the selected point. You can also configure additional fields to provide more context.

For example, hovering over a product in a sales chart might display:

• Product name.
• Total revenue.
• Units sold.
• Profit margin.

Tooltips allow you to provide extra details without adding more charts or labels to the main report page.

Creating a Report Page Tooltip

A report page tooltip uses a separate report page to display customized information.

To create one:

1. Add a new report page.
2. Open the page's formatting settings.
3. Enable the page tooltip option where available.
4. Configure the page size or canvas type for tooltip use.
5. Add compact visuals that display relevant details.
6. Configure the required tooltip fields and page settings.
7. Return to the main visual and assign the tooltip page through its formatting options.

The exact settings may vary depending on the Power BI Desktop version.

For example, hovering over a product category could display a small tooltip page containing revenue, quantity sold, and profit figures for that category.

Keep tooltip pages compact and focused on the selected data point.

Navigating Between Report Pages

Reports with multiple pages need a clear navigation structure.

You can use the following approaches:

• Page tabs for straightforward navigation.
• Buttons with page-navigation actions.
• Bookmarks for alternative report views.
• Drill-through pages for contextual details.

A well-organized report might contain an Overview page, a Regional Analysis page, a Product Analysis page, and a Transaction Details page.

Each page should have a clear purpose, and users should be able to move between related pages without confusion.
