Understanding the Power BI Ecosystem
What Is the Power BI Ecosystem?
The Power BI ecosystem consists of tools and services that support the complete reporting process, from preparing data to publishing and sharing insights.
Each component serves a different purpose, but they work together to help organizations analyze information and collaborate.
Major Components
1. Power BI Desktop
Power BI Desktop is a Windows application used to connect to data, transform it, create data models, write DAX calculations, and design reports.
It is commonly the starting point for developers and analysts building Power BI solutions.
2. Power BI Service
Power BI Service is the online platform used to publish, manage, share, and collaborate on reports and other Power BI content.
For example, an analyst can publish a sales report from Power BI Desktop so that authorized managers can access it through the service.
3. Power BI Mobile
Power BI Mobile applications allow users to access supported reports and dashboards on smartphones and tablets. This helps business users review important information while away from their computers.
4. On-premises Data Gateway
A data gateway can securely connect supported cloud services to data sources hosted within an organization's local network. It is useful when reports rely on data stored on internal servers.
5. Power Query and DAX
Power Query supports data connection and transformation, while DAX provides calculations used in data analysis.
For example, Power Query can remove unnecessary rows from a sales dataset, and DAX can calculate the total revenue from the cleaned data.
How the Components Work Together
Consider a company that stores sales records in a database.
An analyst connects to the database through Power BI Desktop, prepares the data using Power Query, creates a data model, and builds a report. The report is then published to Power BI Service, where authorized employees can access it.
If the source data changes, an appropriately configured refresh process can update the report's underlying data.
This workflow demonstrates how the Power BI ecosystem supports both report development and business collaboration.
