Project 1 - Sales Performance Analysis

Project 1 - Sales Performance Analysis

Project Overview

A sales performance dashboard helps a business understand revenue, profitability, product performance, and regional sales trends.

Imagine that a retail company stores its transactions in an Excel file or database. Management wants to identify its best-selling products, highest-performing regions, and monthly sales trends.

Your task is to build a Power BI report that answers these questions.

Dataset Requirements

Use a dataset containing columns such as:

Column

Description

OrderIDUnique order identifier
OrderDateDate of the transaction
ProductProduct name
CategoryProduct category
RegionSales region
QuantityNumber of units sold
SalesAmountRevenue from the transaction
CostCost associated with the transaction

You can create a small sample dataset in Excel or use a suitable public sales dataset.

Step 1: Import and Transform the Data

Connect Power BI Desktop to the Excel file or database.

Open Power Query Editor and:

  • Remove unnecessary columns.
  • Correct data types.
  • Check for missing values.
  • Remove duplicate records when appropriate.
  • Standardize category and region names.
  • Validate sales and cost values.

Load the cleaned data into Power BI.

Step 2: Create DAX Measures

Create a measure for total sales:

Total Sales =

SUM(Sales[SalesAmount])

Create a measure for total cost:

Total Cost =

SUM(Sales[Cost])

Calculate profit:

Total Profit =

[Total Sales] - [Total Cost]

Calculate profit margin:

Profit Margin % =

DIVIDE(

[Total Profit],

[Total Sales]

)

Format the profit margin measure as a percentage.

Step 3: Build the Report

Create visuals such as:

  • KPI cards for total sales, profit, and order count.
  • A line chart for monthly revenue.
  • A bar chart for sales by product category.
  • A regional sales comparison.
  • A table showing top-performing products.

Add slicers for date, region, and category so users can explore the data.

Step 4: Generate Business Insights

Use the report to investigate:

  • Which products generate the most revenue?
  • Which regions have the highest profit?
  • Are sales increasing or declining over time?
  • Which categories have high sales but low profit margins?

Validate your findings before presenting them. A product with high revenue may not necessarily have high profitability.

Expected outcome: An interactive sales report that helps business users understand performance and identify areas for further investigation.
