Project 4 - Human Resources Analytics

Project 4 - Human Resources Analytics

Project Overview

Human Resources analytics helps organizations understand workforce composition, employee turnover, recruitment, attendance, and other workforce indicators.

In this project, you will create an HR dashboard using employee records and, where available, historical employment data.

Dataset Requirements

A sample dataset may contain:

  • EmployeeID
  • Department
  • JobRole
  • HireDate
  • TerminationDate
  • EmploymentStatus
  • Location
  • SalaryBand

Use synthetic or appropriately authorized data for practice. Avoid exposing real employee information in a public portfolio.

Step 1: Clean and Model the Data

Use Power Query to validate dates, standardize department names, and check for missing or inconsistent employment statuses.

For historical reporting, determine whether the dataset contains current employee records only or a history of employment changes. This distinction affects the calculations you can reliably perform.

Step 2: Create HR Measures

For a dataset containing one current record per employee, you might calculate the employee count as follows:

Employee Count =

DISTINCTCOUNT(Employees[EmployeeID])

For a dataset where EmploymentStatus contains the value "Active" for current employees:

Active Employees =

CALCULATE(

DISTINCTCOUNT(Employees[EmployeeID]),

Employees[EmploymentStatus] = "Active"

)

These measures depend on the accuracy of the employment-status field and the structure of the dataset.

Step 3: Design the HR Dashboard

Include visuals for:

  • Active employee count.
  • Workforce distribution by department.
  • Employee distribution by location.
  • Recruitment trends over time.
  • Employee tenure distribution, if supported by the available data.
  • Turnover metrics, if reliable historical records exist.

Use appropriate security controls when dealing with employee-related information.

Step 4: Analyze Workforce Trends

Investigate questions such as:

  • Which departments have the largest workforces?
  • How has recruitment changed over time?
  • Which locations have experienced the greatest workforce changes?
  • How does employee tenure vary across departments?

Turnover calculations require a defined reporting period and reliable records of employee departures. A current employee list alone is insufficient for calculating historical turnover accurately.

Expected outcome: An HR dashboard that supports workforce planning and helps authorized users explore organizational trends.
