What is HTML and How the Web Works

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is not a programming language. It is a markup language, meaning it describes a page's structure rather than calculating things or making decisions.

Every website you have ever visited is built on top of HTML in some form. When your browser loads a page, it reads an HTML file and turns it into the visual layout you see on screen. Buttons, headings, paragraphs, images, all of it starts as HTML.

Here is the basic flow. You type a website address. Your browser sends a request to a server. The server sends back an HTML file. Your browser reads that file line by line and builds the page on your screen.

Think of HTML as a webpage's skeleton. CSS later adds the skin and clothes, and JavaScript adds behavior and movement. But without the skeleton, nothing else has a place to attach to.
