Accessibility Basics

Accessibility means making sure your website works for everyone, including people using screen readers or other assistive technology. HTML has several built-in features to support this.

Always include meaningful alt text on images. Use semantic tags instead of div wherever they fit. For more complex interactive elements, ARIA attributes can provide extra context to assistive technology, but use them only as a last resort after considering semantic HTML.

<button aria-label="Close menu">X</button>

Explanation:

  • We use alt text to describe images for accessibility and help search engines understand them. When we are offline, alt text helps users understand what an image shows.
  • aria-label on the button gives extra context, since a lone X symbol would otherwise mean nothing to a screen reader.
