Meta Tags

Meta tags live inside the head section and provide information about the page that isn't directly displayed but is used by browsers, search engines, and social media platforms.

The charset meta tag defines the character encoding, almost always set to UTF-8 today.

The viewport meta tag controls how the page scales on mobile devices and is essential for any responsive website.

<meta charset="UTF-8">

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">

<meta name="description" content="Learn HTML from scratch with simple lessons.">

Explanation:

  • The viewport tag here tells mobile browsers to match the page width to the device screen width and start at a normal zoom level.
  • Without this line, most sites would look tiny and zoomed out on a phone. The description meta tag is often shown in search engine results below your page title.
