The PEAS Framework
What Is PEAS?
PEAS is a framework used to describe the task environment of an intelligent agent.
PEAS stands for:
- P — Performance Measure: How the agent's success is evaluated.
- E — Environment: The surroundings in which the agent operates.
- A — Actuators: The mechanisms through which it performs actions.
- S — Sensors: The mechanisms through which it receives information.
Using PEAS helps developers define what an agent must achieve before deciding how to build it.
Example 1: Autonomous Vehicle
PEAS Component | Description |
| Performance Measure | Safety, legal compliance, travel time, passenger comfort |
| Environment | Roads, traffic, pedestrians, weather, road signs |
| Actuators | Steering, brakes, accelerator, indicators |
| Sensors | Cameras, radar, lidar, GPS, vehicle sensors |
The performance measure should consider several objectives. Reaching a destination quickly is not sufficient if the vehicle ignores road safety.
Example 2: Customer-Support Agent
PEAS Component | Description |
| Performance Measure | Response quality, resolution rate, accuracy, customer satisfaction |
| Environment | Customer conversations, support policies, knowledge base |
| Actuators | Sending replies, creating tickets, escalating requests |
| Sensors | User messages, account data, ticket status, available documentation |
This framework helps identify the information the agent needs and the actions it is allowed to perform.
Example 3: Robot Vacuum Cleaner
PEAS Component | Description |
| Performance Measure | Cleaning coverage, time, energy consumption, collision avoidance |
| Environment | Rooms, floors, furniture, people, pets |
| Actuators | Wheels, brushes, suction motor |
| Sensors | Bump sensors, cameras, distance sensors, dirt sensors |
How to Create a PEAS Description
Follow these steps:
- Identify the task the agent must perform.
- Define measurable indicators of success.
- Describe the environment and its constraints.
- List the actions available to the agent.
- Identify the information sources it needs.
Practical Exercise
Create a PEAS description for an AI-based traffic management system.
Consider:
- How should traffic flow be measured?
- What conditions exist in the environment?
- What actions can the system take?
- What data must it collect?
Possible inputs include traffic-camera feeds, vehicle counts, and signal status. Possible actions include changing traffic-light timings or recommending alternative routes, subject to applicable safety rules and operational permissions.
