Introduction to Neural Networks
What Is a Neural Network?
A neural network is a machine learning model made up of interconnected computational units called neurons. These neurons process input data, perform mathematical calculations, and pass information to other neurons.
For example, an image recognition system can learn patterns such as edges, shapes, and object features to identify whether an image contains a cat or a dog.
A neural network typically consists of three types of layers:
- Input layer: Receives the input features.
- Hidden layers: Process information and learn patterns.
- Output layer: Produces the final prediction.
A network with multiple hidden layers is commonly described as a deep neural network.
How Does a Neural Network Work?
Each neuron receives inputs, multiplies them by weights, adds a bias, and applies an activation function.
A simplified mathematical representation is:
[
z = w_1x_1 + w_2x_2 + b
]
Here, (x) represents the input, (w) represents weights, and (b) is the bias.
The neuron then applies an activation function:
[
a = f(z)
]
During training, the network adjusts its weights and biases to reduce prediction errors.
Applications of Neural Networks
Neural networks are widely used in:
- Image and facial recognition.
- Speech recognition and voice assistants.
- Language translation and text generation.
- Medical image analysis.
- Fraud detection and forecasting.
Their effectiveness depends on the quality of data, model design, computational resources, and training process.
