Symbolic and Rule-Based AI
1.1 What Is Symbolic AI?
Symbolic AI is an approach in which knowledge is represented using symbols, facts, rules, and logical relationships. Instead of learning everything from data, the system uses explicitly defined knowledge to solve problems.
For example, a simple system that determines whether a person is eligible for a discount might follow this rule:
- If the customer is a student, provide a 10% discount.
- Otherwise, provide no student discount.
The system evaluates the rule and produces a result.
1.2 How Rule-Based AI Works
A rule-based system generally contains three components:
- Knowledge base: Stores facts and rules.
- Inference engine: Applies rules to available facts.
- User interface: Accepts input and presents results.
Consider a basic customer-support system that identifies the type of issue based on a user's message.
def identify_issue(message):
message = message.lower()
if "refund" in message:
return "Refund Support"
elif "password" in message:
return "Account Support"
elif "delivery" in message:
return "Delivery Support"
return "General Support"
print(identify_issue("I need help with my refund"))
Output:
Refund Support
This example uses predefined conditions to classify a message. It does not learn from previous conversations.
Advantages of Rule-Based AI
- Decisions are easy to understand and explain.
- Rules can be tested individually.
- The system can work without a large training dataset.
- It is useful when business policies are clearly defined.
Limitations
- Developers must create and maintain the rules.
- Handling thousands of exceptions can become difficult.
- The system cannot automatically learn new patterns from experience.
- It may fail when inputs do not match the predefined conditions.
Where Is Rule-Based AI Used?
Rule-based systems are useful in business workflows, eligibility checks, simple troubleshooting systems, policy validation, and applications where decisions must follow explicit rules.
Knowledge Check
- What is the role of an inference engine?
- Does a traditional rule-based system automatically learn from new data?
- Give one example of a problem that can be solved using predefined rules.
