Advanced Prompting and Reliable AI Outputs
Chain-of-Thought and Stepwise Tasks
Some prompting approaches encourage a model to work through a complex task in stages. In practice, you can request a concise explanation of the key steps, assumptions, and checks rather than relying on an unverified answer.
For example:
"Compare these two database indexing strategies. State the assumptions, explain the performance trade-offs, and recommend a choice for the given workload."
This encourages a structured response that is easier to evaluate.
Constrained Output
Applications often need predictable output formats. You can request JSON, tables, bullet points, or a defined set of fields.
Example prompt:
Extract the following information from the text:
- name
- company
Return valid JSON only. Use null for missing fields.
Do not invent information that is not present.
For production systems, validate generated output programmatically. A prompt alone cannot guarantee valid JSON or correct information.
Grounding Responses in Provided Information
LLMs may generate unsupported details when they lack relevant context. Grounding gives the model source material to use when answering.
For example:
Answer the question using only the documentation below.
If the answer is not present, say:
"Not specified in the provided documentation."
Documentation:
[Insert relevant documentation]
Question:
Which authentication method does the API support?
Grounding can reduce unsupported claims, but the model may still misinterpret the supplied material. Important answers should be checked against the source.
Common Prompting Mistakes
- Giving vague or contradictory instructions.
- Providing too little context.
- Requesting many unrelated tasks at once.
- Assuming that confident answers are necessarily correct.
- Failing to define the expected output.
- Including confidential data unnecessarily.
Effective prompt engineering combines clear instructions with testing, validation, and appropriate human review.
