Understanding Feature Engineering
Feature engineering is the process of creating, transforming, or selecting input variables to help machine learning models identify useful patterns. These input variables are called features.
For example, a customer dataset might contain a purchase date and a delivery date. Instead of using both dates independently, you can calculate the delivery duration as a new feature. This derived value may be more useful for predicting delivery delays.
Feature engineering helps improve data quality, make patterns easier to learn, and reduce unnecessary complexity in machine learning workflows.
Understanding Features and Targets
Consider a dataset used to predict house prices.
Area (sq. ft.) | Bedrooms | Age (years) | Price |
| 1,000 | 2 | 10 | 35,00,000 |
| 1,500 | 3 | 5 | 55,00,000 |
| 2,000 | 4 | 2 | 80,00,000 |
Here, area, bedrooms, and age are features, while price is the target variable.
In Python, separate the features from the target using Pandas:
import pandas as pd
df = pd.DataFrame({
"Area": [1000, 1500, 2000],
"Bedrooms": [2, 3, 4],
"Age": [10, 5, 2],
"Price": [3500000, 5500000, 8000000]
})
X = df[["Area", "Bedrooms", "Age"]]
y = df["Price"]
print(X)
print(y)
Separating features and targets makes the dataset easier to prepare for supervised machine learning.
Common Feature Engineering Techniques
Feature engineering can include:
- Creating new variables from existing columns.
- Converting categorical values into numerical representations.
- Scaling numerical features.
- Extracting information from dates and text.
- Selecting useful variables and removing redundant ones.
The appropriate technique depends on the dataset, the prediction objective, and the requirements of the chosen model.
