Introduction to Data Visualization
Data visualization is the process of representing information through charts, graphs, and plots. It helps data scientists identify patterns, compare values, understand distributions, and communicate findings more effectively than raw tables alone.
Python provides several visualization libraries, including Matplotlib and Seaborn. Matplotlib offers detailed control over charts, while Seaborn provides a convenient interface for creating attractive statistical visualizations.
Installing the Libraries
Install the required packages using pip:
pip install matplotlib seaborn pandas
Import the libraries into your Python program:
import pandas as pd
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import seaborn as sns
Creating Your First Chart
Consider monthly sales data.
months = ["Jan", "Feb", "Mar", "Apr", "May"]
sales = [12000, 15000, 13500, 18000, 22000]
plt.plot(months, sales)
plt.title("Monthly Sales")
plt.xlabel("Month")
plt.ylabel("Sales Revenue")
plt.show()
The plot() function creates a line chart, while title(), xlabel(), and ylabel() add descriptive labels. The show() function displays the chart.
A well-designed visualization should have a clear purpose, readable labels, and an appropriate chart type. Avoid adding decorative elements that make the information harder to interpret.
