Understanding Exploratory Data Analysis

Understanding Exploratory Data Analysis

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is the process of examining a dataset to understand its structure, identify patterns, detect unusual observations, and discover relationships between variables before building models or drawing conclusions.

EDA helps data scientists move beyond simply viewing rows and columns. It combines statistical summaries, visualizations, and analytical questions to understand what the data reveals.

Why Is EDA Important?

EDA helps you:

  • Understand the distribution of values in a dataset.
  • Identify missing values and unusual observations.
  • Compare categories and numerical measurements.
  • Discover relationships between variables.
  • Determine whether the data is suitable for further analysis or machine learning.

Loading and Exploring a Dataset

Consider a dataset containing product sales information.

import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame({

"Product": ["Laptop", "Phone", "Tablet", "Laptop", "Phone", "Tablet"],

"Region": ["North", "South", "East", "South", "North", "East"],

"Units_Sold": [12, 25, 18, 15, 30, 20],

"Price": [55000, 30000, 25000, 55000, 30000, 25000],

"Rating": [4.5, 4.2, 4.0, 4.7, 4.4, 3.9]

})

print(df.head())

print(df.shape)

print(df.info())

print(df.describe())

These commands provide an initial understanding of the dataset, including its dimensions, column types, and numerical statistics.

Before proceeding, identify the question you want to answer. For example, you might investigate which product sells the most units, which region generates the highest revenue, or whether product ratings are associated with sales.
