Introduction to Interactive Data Visualization
Interactive data visualization allows users to explore information by hovering over charts, zooming into specific regions, selecting data points, and filtering displayed values. Unlike static charts, interactive visualizations let users investigate data according to their own questions.
Python's Plotly library makes it possible to create interactive charts for data analysis, business reporting, and dashboards. It supports a wide range of visualizations, including line charts, bar charts, scatter plots, histograms, and geographic maps.
Installing Plotly
Install Plotly using pip:
pip install plotly pandas
Import the required libraries:
import pandas as pd
import plotly.express as px
import plotly.graph_objects as go
Plotly Express provides a concise interface for common charts, while Graph Objects offers more detailed control over chart elements.
Creating Your First Interactive Chart
Consider monthly revenue data.
import plotly.express as px
df = pd.DataFrame({
"Month": ["Jan", "Feb", "Mar", "Apr", "May"],
"Revenue": [12000, 15000, 13500, 18000, 22000]
})
fig = px.line(
df,
x="Month",
y="Revenue",
title="Monthly Revenue Trend",
markers=True
)
fig.show()
The chart allows users to hover over individual points to inspect values and interact with the visualization.
Plotly charts can also be saved as standalone HTML files:
fig.write_html("monthly_revenue.html")
The generated file can be opened in a web browser and retains its interactive features. This is useful when sharing a visualization without requiring the recipient to run the original Python code.
