What is Deep Learning
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural networks with many hidden layers, allowing them to learn highly complex patterns directly from raw data.
How It Differs From Traditional Machine Learning
Traditional machine learning often needs manually engineered features before training. Deep learning models can learn useful features on their own, directly from raw inputs like images, audio, or text.
Why Depth Matters
Each additional layer in a deep network learns increasingly abstract patterns. In image recognition, early layers might detect edges, while deeper layers detect shapes, and eventually entire objects.
Common Deep Learning Architectures
- Convolutional Neural Networks: Specialized for image and visual data.
- Recurrent Neural Networks: Designed for sequential data, like text or time series.
- Transformers: Power modern language models by processing entire sequences at once.
Why It Requires More Data and Compute
Deep learning models have far more parameters than traditional models, so they typically need large datasets and powerful hardware, like GPUs, to train effectively.
Real-World Examples
- Face recognition on smartphones, unlocking devices by identifying facial features.
- Voice assistants like Alexa and Siri convert speech into text using deep learning models.
- Self driving cars detecting pedestrians, vehicles, and road signs from camera footage in real time.
- Language translation apps convert entire sentences between languages while preserving meaning.
