Ridge Regression Explained

Ridge Regression Explained

Regular linear regression sometimes fits training data very closely, including noise, instead of the real pattern. This makes it perform poorly on new, unseen data. Ridge regression fixes this problem.

Think of a student who memorizes every question from a practice book, instead of understanding the concept. That student scores well on those exact questions.

But the same student struggles when the exam has slightly different questions. Ridge regression prevents a model from memorizing training data too closely.

It does this by adding a penalty that discourages the model from relying too heavily on any single feature.

How ridge regression helps

  • It adds a penalty to features with unusually large influence on predictions.
  • This penalty shrinks the impact of less important variables, without removing them completely.
  • The result is a model that generalizes better to new, unseen data.

Real-world example

Imagine predicting insurance premiums using many factors, like age, income, city, and driving history. Some irrelevant variables may accidentally get included too.

Ridge regression reduces the influence of such noisy variables. The final prediction then depends mainly on the factors that genuinely matter.
