Feature Engineering Explained

Feature Engineering Explained

Feature engineering is the process of creating new, more useful features from existing data, so a model can learn patterns more effectively than it could from the raw data alone.

Why feature engineering matters

  • Raw data does not always capture the patterns a model needs.
  • Well designed features can significantly improve model accuracy.
  • It often has more impact on performance than choosing a complex algorithm.

Creating a new feature from existing columns

df["Price_Per_Sqft"] = df["Price"] / df["Area"]

This creates a new, more meaningful feature by combining two existing columns, giving the model direct access to a relationship it would otherwise have to learn indirectly.

Extracting information from dates

df["Year"] = pd.to_datetime(df["Date"]).dt.year

df["Month"] = pd.to_datetime(df["Date"]).dt.month

Breaking a date into year and month lets the model use time-based patterns, like seasonal trends, which a raw date column cannot express clearly.

Good feature engineering often makes the difference between an average model and a highly accurate one.
