Why Routing is Needed in React

Why Routing is Needed in React

What is Routing?

A React app loads a single HTML file. Without routing, every user sees the same page and the URL never changes. Routing lets different URLs display different components, while still keeping everything in one page load.

Why is it Used?

Without routing:

  • The back button does not work as expected
  • Users cannot bookmark a specific page
  • Links cannot be shared
  • Search engines see a single URL

React does not include routing it is a UI library, not a framework. The standard solution is React Router.

Client-Side vs Server-Side Rendering

Aspect

Client-side rendering (typical React)

Server-side rendering

Where HTML is builtIn the browser, by JavaScriptOn the server, before sending
First-load speedSlower JavaScript must load firstFaster — HTML arrives ready
Navigation after loadVery fast, no page reloadRequires a server round trip
SEONeeds care; crawlers must execute JSStrong by default
Typical toolVite + React RouterNext.js, Remix

For dashboards and applications behind a login, client-side rendering is fine. For content sites that depend on search traffic, a server-rendering framework like Next.js is worth learning after you are comfortable with React.
