ReactJS Prerequisites: Node.js, npm & VS Code Setup

Prerequisites Before You Start

What Do You Need Installed?

Three things:

  1. Node.js - lets you run JavaScript outside the browser. React's build tools need it.
  2. npm - the package manager that installs libraries. It comes bundled with Node.js.
  3. A code editor - Visual Studio Code is the standard choice and is free.

Why is it Used?

Browsers do not understand JSX. Before your code reaches the browser, a build tool converts JSX into regular JavaScript. That build tool runs on Node.js. This is why React needs a setup step while plain HTML does not.
