Using React Developer Tools
What is It?
React Developer Tools is a free browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It adds two tabs to your browser's developer tools.
The Components Tab
Shows your component tree instead of raw HTML. Selecting a component reveals:
- Its current props
- Its current state and Hook values
- Which parent rendered it
You can edit props and state live to test different scenarios without changing code — useful for checking an empty state or an error message quickly.
The Profiler Tab
Records a session and shows which components rendered, how long each took, and why each one rendered. This is how you find performance problems rather than guessing at them.
Why is it Used?
console.log tells you what a value was at one moment. React DevTools shows you the whole tree's current state at once, which is far faster for questions like "why is this prop undefined?"
Install it from your browser's extension store, then open developer tools with F12 and look for the "Components" and "Profiler" tabs.
