End-to-End Data Analysis Capstone Project

End-to-End Data Analysis Capstone Project

This capstone brings together everything in the handbook. You will take a real dataset from raw files to a final set of insights.

a. Project Overview and Dataset

In this project, you will analyze the sales data of a retail store. The goal is to understand what drives sales and profit, and to suggest ways to improve them. A popular choice is the Superstore sales dataset, available on Kaggle and other open data sites.

Start by writing the business questions. For example, which regions earn the most profit, which products lose money, and how do sales change by month? Clear questions keep the project focused.

Set up your workspace with a project folder, a Jupyter notebook, and the libraries you need. Load the data and take a first look using head(), info(), and describe().

b. Cleaning and Exploring the Data

Begin with cleaning. Check for missing values and duplicates, fix data types, and standardize column names. Convert the date columns with pd.to_datetime(). Write short notes about every change you make.

Then explore the data. Look at each column on its own and then in pairs. Use value_counts() for categories, histograms for numbers, and groupby() to compare groups.

Check for outliers in sales and profit. Decide whether to keep, cap, or remove them, and explain your choice. A good record of decisions makes your project more professional.

c. Analysis and Visualization

Now answer your business questions with numbers and charts. Use groupby() to find sales and profit by region, category, and month. Use a line chart for monthly trends and bar charts for comparisons.

monthly = df.set_index("order_date")["sales"].resample("ME").sum()
monthly.plot(title="Monthly Sales")

Use a heatmap to look at correlations between sales, discount, and profit. You may find that high discounts lead to losses. Optionally, build a simple regression model to predict profit, or an interactive Plotly chart for your key findings.

Every chart should have a clear title, labels, and one message. Remove anything that does not help answer a question.

d. Presenting Insights and Conclusions

Analysis is only valuable when others understand it. Finish with a short summary of your findings. State each insight clearly and support it with a number or a chart.

A strong summary includes the main findings, the reasons behind them, and clear recommendations. For example, "Reducing discounts above 30 percent on furniture could improve profit." Mention any limits of the data too.

Share your work as a clean notebook, a short report, or a dashboard. Upload it to GitHub or add it to your portfolio. A complete project like this shows employers that you can handle the full analysis process.
